Sound joints on an exposed stack
A chimney is the most exposed brickwork on the house, so its mortar joints are usually the first to wash out. Once they go, rain soaks straight into the brickwork and the stack begins to break down from the outside in.
We rake out the failed joints back to sound mortar and repoint the stack with a mix suited to the brick and the exposure, so the joints shed water again without trapping damp in the wall. Where the flaunching or pots have also gone, we renew them at the same time so the whole stack is put right in one visit.

How often does a chimney need repointing?
It depends on the exposure and the original mortar, but a stack losing its joints or showing damp inside is telling you it is time. Repointing early is far cheaper than a rebuild.
Will repointing stop the damp inside?
Where the damp is caused by water getting into failed joints, yes. We also check the flashing and flaunching, since those are common causes too, and explain what the stack needs.
Do you repoint the whole house or just the chimney?
We focus on the chimney and roofline brickwork as part of our roofing work. For full-house repointing we can point you towards the right trade.
How long does chimney repointing take?
